White Team Beats Mercer 5-2

The White Team traveled to play Mercer University this afternoon in heat touching 100°F during the match. While the heat was certainly a factor for both teams, Tech outlasted their opponents for a 5-2 win.

Jordan Richardson scored the first goal after cutting inside his defender on the left flank and firing to the top right corner for 1-0.

Newly joined freshman, Michael Sullivan, registered a classy hat trick in his second appearance for the club. The first, a simple tap-in after Richardson’s shot rebounded to Sullivan nicely (2-0). His second, a well placed finish to the bottom left corner after finding space behind the opposing back line (4-2). Finally, Sullivan met fellow freshman, Alex Varghese’s, cross with an acrobatic volley to complete his hat trick in style (5-2).

In between Sullivan’s 2nd and 3rd goal, center back, Seth Daly, rose above the rest to head in Yanni Angelides’ excellent cross to make the game 3-2 just after halftime.

Overall, the game was certainly slower dealing with the heat, but Tech was deliberate and incisive when it counted, leading the team to a well deserved victory.

The White Team travel to Gainesville, FL next week for the tournament being held at the University of Florida. Last fall the team reached the final, but fell short to the tournament hosts in a scorching hot match like today’s.

That said, the White Team leaves Friday afternoon with every intention of bringing back the silverware up for grabs this upcoming weekend.
